Effexor withdrawal -- cold turkey or tapering off? I'm desperate to get off of Effexor, and have an appointment with my doctor to discuss options. However, my doctor has consistently struck me as not very well informed about side effects (he got me on this in the first place). After research here and numerous websites, I see that the tapering process is always recommended over cold turkey. The tapering process is a long period of moderate discomfort as opposed to a brief period of severe discomfort (I've experienced this when I've run out previously -- climbing the walls after24 hours). However, I'm the "pull the band-aid off quickly" kind of patient. I can endure great pain for brief periods much better than slow, grinding discomfort. I'd rather be back on my feet sooner than later, if possible. Are there long-term effects of cold turkey or does it pass? Any advice or first person experiences? Will I need to be inpatient in some sort of detox setting? If tapering, how can I stay functioning thru discomfort? Any info appreciated.

lakinjae replied: "I'm not a Dr but I have been through what you're talking about and trust me you do NOT want to stop cold turkey! I don't know who told you tapering was a slow grinding process but when I did it, it wasn't nearly as bad as stopping suddenly. (which I tried once) I was total nut case on effexor! This drug is dangerous in my book! Just simmer down and take it slow. I've heard of some people having much worse symptoms when stopping suddenly than before they started it! These symptoms included suicide, self mutilation, deep depression just to name a few! I wish you all the best and God bless!"

Dawn M replied: "Don't cold turkey. I have been off and on Effexor 2 times as it is the ONLY antidepressant that works for me. Tapering can be very painless but it does take some time. When I went off the symptoms were dizziness, brain shivers, bowel problems, and all over "out of body" experience. However, I didn't taper. It caused me to have to shut down for a couple weeks. Some say that switching to Prozac, low dose, plus a short term tranquillizer is the trick. Then you go off prozac slowly as it is not as bad of a withdrawal. Another is just to wean down to 37.5 tabs then take them every other day and then half them and continue until you are down to 1/4 tab. I haven't done this but I have read message boards where people have been successful doing one of these two things. Good luck."

Angelia replied: "I took Effexor for a long time before it stopped working for me. My doctor had me taper off of it, to avoid the withdrawal effects. I felt no bad effects while tapering off. I took another antidepressant at one point (Paxil) and quit cold turkey and it was a bad experience, due to the withdrawal effects. There shouldn't be any reason you would need to be in a detox setting like inpatient care. I would say that if you do experience any withdrawal effects, talk to your doctor about how to handle them. Hope this helps."

I am going cold turkey on effexor withdrawal? How long does it take? I have been off a week now and I am? still feeling dizzy, emotional, extremely tired and generally weird, blank headed and confused

Darksuns replied: "OMG, I feel so bad for you! My sister did the exact same thing. She went through hell trying to get off that stuff!!! She's been off of it for a couple of months now and she's doing alot better. Her doc actually sent her to an herbalist to get some help with the withdrawl symptoms. I wish i knew exactly what it was she took so i could tell you.(I just called her, but she's at work ....) I wish you luck! It'll get better, just hold on!!!"

SarahMorgan replied: "I was totally on Effexor and I tried to wean myself off of them. I eventually just had to quit taking them and I had the same feelings. In another week or so you will be going to bed and realize that you didn't feel any symptoms that day. Believe me, you'll be ok. Just stick with it. You don't want to go through it again!"

latrailera2000 replied: "Not a good idea to go cold turkey ,just for that reason better to cut down gradually. I'm trying now don't like the "brain shivers"bgood luck"

chinapossum replied: "maybe you could wean yourself off it slowly. Reduce the dose a little at a time. If you only ever took one pill at a time you could either take one every second day, or you could try opening the capsule and swallowing only half of the little white bead thingys inside."

jopaterson07 replied: "iv been on them for nearly 3 years, can i ask why you have decided to come off them? iv lowered my dose but dont want to be on them forever!"

tom a replied: "Nice to hear that you are back to your old self already.lol"

kwistenbiebel replied: "You should not withdraw from effexor without a doctor. Do not experiment alone with doses. If you have been off a week, congratulations, you are probably stronger than you thought. Hold on, there is still so much to do and to enjoy. Read the article in wikipedia on effexor."

LOU-LOU replied: "i should imagine it can take up to 2 weeks or more. but you've done ONE WEEK already...GOOD FOR YOU !!!WELL DONE mate it's not easy. my friend was addicted a while ago...it was a very emotional time for them..and your head will be feeling scattered...that's pretty normal too.....keep at it, and you'll get there...keep getting lots of support too...thats really important...you can email me if you want....i'll try and help."

Michael S replied: "WTF is Effexor?"

jason h replied: "on some meds its important to TAPER OFF. dont try cold turkey. the drug companies design those drugs to be hard to come off of when you do get the monkey off of your back try to find other ways to cope with depression besides going back to the drug pushers imho"

because of ins. issues, I had to stop taking my Effexor XR cold turkey. How long will this withdrawal last? No insurance, not enough $ to buy my 150 mg of Effexor XR. I have been off it cold turkey for 2 1/2 days now and don't know how long I can take this "feeling" in my brain. It is just awful! How much longer do I have to suffer with this?

C C C replied: "It is best NOT to stop medication cold turkey. Now I commend you for stopping, this medications will rob you of a normal life. You should wean yourself of the medication if you can. Next why not learn the techniques that have been stopping depression in many countires. No doctors..no medications..you heal alone and it works..Get the report"Why you don't want to live"..read it online and heal alone. If you do the techniques it does work"

Stopped Effexor cold turkey 8 days. What about trb health? Went to twice daily dosing because insurance did not cover xl any longer. Kept forgetting that second dose. One day just didn't take either dose. Also was taking wellbutrin to help with side effects of Effexor. Stopped both meds. In searching for help, came across The Road Back. Cannot find info from a consumer review group about TRB Health. Any input. Also, this withdrawal is worse than awful. I am a pharmacist.

Just Google It! replied: "Just call your pharmacist."

SingingCrab7 replied: "I feel for you, those withdrawals are truly terrible. Call your doctor and let them know what is going on and why you had to stop taking the medicine. Most doctors will work with you and help you to gradually ease off the drug. They should be able to get you samples of your medicine to get you through. Hang in there!"

SUTHHERN REDD replied: "If you are still wanting to be on a antidepressant talk to your pharmacy about Pristiq................I was on Effexor and we tried withdrawing from it and it was pure HELL.....as you will read most places it is............ My psychiatrist switched me over to 50mg of Pristiq -- just went from the Effexor to Pristiq the following day and had NO side effects at all from the change!!! I would recommend this medication to anyone. It doesn't have a generic form though so you do have to get brand."

how long does effexor 75mg withdrawal last when you come off cold turkey??? ive been on 75mg for a few months. the first few days i stopped i took st johns wort and it really helped. now its day4 and im feeling those little shocks. does any one know when this stops???? is there an end in sight???

Elizabeth W replied: "you should never ever go off of any medicine but especially anti depressant medication cold turkey it can be very dangerous."

MOMOFIAN replied: "i was on effexor to treat my migrains it did not help so i too got off the meds i was a total bitch i am sure every one wanted to kill me. it made me mean and crazy. please contact your dr."

rebecca1 replied: "Oh my God, you should know better than to go off of medication like that. Talk to your doctor about how to go about getting off the medication."

Isthisnametaken2 replied: "I stopped effexor and experienced vertigo that got worse and worse. When I went to the doctor for that, I was prescribed something for it. I expect it would have treated those symptoms enough over time, but for me, I needed other meds. The vertigo this last time was off and on for a week (more on as the time wore on). Since it's supposed to take a few weeks to get the medication built up in the system, I would say it would take the same to get it out. I gotta add to what the other person said, yes, I was pretty ugly, too, and that wasn't fair to those around me, especially my young son."

hotmama replied: "I was on effexor xr 150 mg for about 4 months, I decided I didnt like it because i was still tired all the time and had no sex drive...i decided to go on wellbutrin xl....okay, I tapered off of the effexor and I felt like crap for over a month AFTER finally stopping, I felt dizzy all the time, whenever I turned around it was like the whole room moved with me and I had constant headaches....I guess that medication is pretty hard on you and hard to get off of without feeling like total s^*#. Everyone is different, you may get over it quickly. You should also never go off of any medication without doctors orders, you should taper down. You were only on 75mg so you only have one more strength to taper down to, If you are on plain effexor tablets then you could take your 75mg tabs for 1 week, then cut them in 1/2 and take 1/2 (37.5mg) tab for 1 week, then stop. Thats what a doctor would do anyway, effexor is only made in 37.5mg,75mg,and 150mg..and if you have the tablets then you dont need to pay for 37.5mg you can just cut yours in half to make it....tapering off may help, but like i said, everyone is different..."

Becky H replied: "You should never go off your meds without first talking to you dr. or a psychatrist. It can cause to to have bad side effects. Please I advise you to go to the emergency room or call your dr."

gun 4 replied: "it will stop, but what you did is not good for you, weening youself would have been more prudent. did your doctor advise you to do this? i am on effexor (225 mg) and have been on many different kinds for the last 20 yrs and i know how it feels! but the only thing i would be more concerned with is, what will be the side effects after it is out of your system?"

Miss Diddy replied: "I tried coming off of effexor by just completely stopping, lets say it only lasted 2 days because the headaches were so severe I thought I was dying. I read a couple of message boards and someone said they were able to come off effexor by opening the capsules and just taking a small dose out of it. I did that for like a week with no side effects whatsoever. Finally after my week was up I stopped taking it all together and voila here I am, I had no problems."

Shannon V replied: "first of all you should have checked with your doctor before stopping off the effexor with most of the antidepressants out there you need to wean off gradually or you will have withdrawal symptoms i would check with your doctor."

Amy Renee replied: "The reason that you are feeling shocks is because it is dangeous to take St Johns Wort within 1 week of taking Effexor. It can cause a syndrome called Serotonin Syndrome. Serotonin constricts your viens it is secreted by the small intestine and absorbed by blood platelets and circulated in the blood. When the amount of serotonin is either decreased or increased it will result in an adverse reaction to your body. You need to discuss with your doctor that you stopped effexor cold turkey-which should not have been done-and that you are now taking St johns wort-which should not have been done so quickly after stopping the effexor."

valleyviolet replied: "Why are you discontinuing your medication? Please discuss this with your doctor."

Kimberly T replied: "For me, and I forgot to take mine today, oh well, I do not have any reaction, but that's me. I do not know what the shocks are from, I do get some nasty headaches, feels like water moving around thru my head. WEIRD I know."

I was on Effexor and Remeron and I stopped it cold turkey ? I was taking Effexor and Remeron. The remeron, I've been taking it about a month 30 MG, and Effexor only for 5 days, I had to stop Zoloft because of horrible side effects. I stopped the Remeron and Effexor yesterday, not because of side effects just because I am so angry at my diagnosis of depression. I am so angry. I can't take the medication even though I want to. My anger has total control over me. So will I go through withdrawal of Effexor since I was only on it 5 days? And will I get withdrawal from Remeron that I was on a month. And how do I tell my doctor I can't take it because I am so angry What will he say or do

Toss that Yeyo and Run replied: "Zoloft and effexor have some similarities, and if you took zoloft for an extened period of time then went straight to the Effexor you probably will have discontinuation symptoms. If there was a time lapse between taking these two drugs then 5 days on Effexor isn't long enough to cause discomfort. You will soon find out later today or tomorrow if you will. If you do have them you might feeling like there are electric jolts in your brain and you may get dizzy and have some flu-like symptoms. Your doctor deals with people all day who quit taking their meds because that is an inherent problem with psychiatric disorders. How the doctor reacts is indeterminable. Some doctors won't care, be understanding and keep trying to help you. Other doctors will hang a non-compliant label on you and from then on you will be the last in line for their priority. If you need an emergency appointment or call them during a crisis some doctors will be less than enthusiastic about helping you. Some doctors will even kick you out of their office and tell you to never come back. There is no telling what will happen until it does."

Jan C replied: "I am not a Doctor but I suggest you take the medications now and talk with your Physician about how you feel. Most medications should not be stopped cold turkey. Being angry because you have been diagnosed isn't going to help a thing. Most people have some clinical depression at some time in their life. We face many things in life that we don't like but we have no choice but to deal with it. Anger only keeps it on your mind more."

Anyone had to quit Effexor and/or Wellbutrin cold turkey? I have been on Wellbutrin SR 300 for about 3 yrs, and Effexor XR 150 for about 16 months. my husband changed jobs & his new job has no insurance, I can get insurance through my job but not until Aug 1. I called my doc & told him the situation, asked for any samples but they didnt have any. their best advice was they'd call in the rxs to Costco bcuz that was supposed 2b the cheapest. when i called the pharmacy found out it was still going 2b $150 for each rx, for 1 month (that was w/generic welb but there was no gen eff). anyway i didnt have $$ to buy them, w/husband just changing jobs & we've also just moved. So i've been without the meds for about 1 week now. ive felt pretty nauseated, dizzy, sweaty, today had a bit of a crying episode over seemingly nothing.... i'm just wondering if ne1 has had the same situation & how long did it take for the withdrawal type symptoms to subside?

susan g replied: "I was on celexa for about 3 years and quit cold turkey too. I had a lot of withdrawl, and anxiety for the first little bit, but then it subsided. It is suggested to never quit these medications cold turkey ( I didn't know this), but try to wean off of them. Hang in there, it will get better. We become addicted to these medications, and it takes time to get over it."

John F replied: "I know the feeling. The best, cheapest and easiest remedy is exercise - at least 1 hour per day, every day. This will help with your withdrawal symptoms and your depression. Eat lots of turkey, fish, bananas, flax seeds and soy protein. Avoid fatty, fried foods and junk food. Try Kava, Valerian, or Chamomile to stay calm. Take a B-complex vitamin supplement each day. Use mediation, prayer or other relaxation techniques. Get back on the meds as soon as you're able and pressure your government to offer universal health care so you won't have to worry about losing coverage again!!!"

oceanlady580 replied: "i am going thru the exact same thing right now with the effexor XR it was awful. it was like going thru a street drug withdrawal i was sick to my stomach, i was hot then cold, irritable, one minute i was laughing hysterically and the next crying over something so simple it was like it was a tragady. i was broke so i could not take it for 2 weeks. the symptoms hit you hard and get worse. also i had massive headaches when i woke up. i am back on it and NEVER do i want to go off of it again. is there a clinic you could go to in the mean time? can you ask your dr. for some klonipin or adivan till the 1st of august. if it gets unbearable go to the ER and tell them you are sick and hopefully they can hook you up with enough effexor till the 1st. good luck i feel for you"

jacko replied: "See depression treatments, at. (.net.nz/~shaneris) on page 2: read that page, then go to "the road back" and antidepressant websites. Several types of generic antidepressants, like fluoxetine, are available for $4 from WalMart: see your doctor. View (genericdrugslist.pdf) [I had to use the WebFerret search engine to access this: Netscape & IE didn't work]."

Kat replied: "I quit EFFEXOR cold turkey because my doctor hadn't told me how to taper off of it. It was bad - for the first time ever I suffered with vertigo and I was desperately depressed. Once I talked to my doctor and she gave me samples with instructions to taper off in about 3 weeks I felt much better. I started taking wellbutrin during this same time. Sorry you feel bad and I don't know how long it takes to get through this."

Matt B replied: "Unfortunately, if you try to quit cold turkey you have to be prepared to go through hell. I know, I successfully got off of it, but I took time. What you need to do is reduce your intake slowly. I would start by going from 300mg to 150mg for the next 1-2 months. This will cut your costs in half and give you body time to adjust before the next taper. In the meantime, you need to find a better source for meds. I happen to know a site that sells cheap generics manufactured in India. I checked out the price on Effexor XR for you, 100 150mg capsules for $99, a little cheaper per pill in greater bulk. If you cut you dose in half (they sell 75mgs too) you will make it for a little over six months on a hundred bucks. They also sell Wellbutrin, 260 150mg pills for $94. Thats over 4 months at you current dose or almost 8 months if you cut it in half. I have ordered from this site before, they are awesome, they deliver fast considering foreign and all the drugs I have purchased have been good quality. I will not post the site here, but if you e-mail me I will reply with the link and send you a write up I did about how I got off Effexor step by step. Good luck."

effexor withdrawal/electric shocks??? I have moderate depression. My doctor prescribed effexor xr the lowest dose. Within 2 months I was put on 150 mg. I began to gain weight. Which is what my doctor said wouldn't happen. Despite the research I did, I know weight gain is almost mandatory for psych meds. At the time I was desperate for help. I could no longer counsel and sooth myself when depression became unbearable. So...after extensive research I tried meds. Three days ago I went off Effexor 150mg cold turkey. I just hate the way I felt on meds. My withdrawal isn't horrible. But I am feeling the electric shock, brain shiver feeling. Can anyone give any insight, estimated time of withdrawal, personal experience??? Please...no negative comments. I know I should've informed my dr prior to stopping but I just couldn't wait any longer.

butterscotch'smomma replied: "Bless your heart, I went through the same thing when I went off of the Effexor. My dr had told me the same thing about not gaining weight, but I did. As for the withdrawal symptoms that you are having, I had the same ones when I went off it as well. From what I remember, the withdrawal symptoms lasted for about 2 weeks. Be sure that you get back with your doctor, and that you have he or she but you on another anti depressant. I don't know if it would help you or not, but my doctor put me on Zoloft, and I have NOT had any weight gain with it....matter of fact, it was the opposite. GOOD LUCK"

Dust in the Wind replied: "That is a common withdrawal feeling hun...and yeah, things may get worse before they get better. I even went into black depressions. It is not advisable to go off of any medicine cold turkey. Just call your doctor, really, it is important...they can get you off a little at a time. I went down 150 to 75 to 37.5 and then every other day...but still could not get off or away from the brain frizzies (my word, lol) so he put me on a low dose of lexapro and I was able to get off with that (and lost weight, first time for everything). Now...we all react different to the medicines and that goes for going off them too. I was honest with you about my experience going off...but I also want to say, that it got me through a very, very bad time in my life and if I were that way again I would not hesitate to take it. Dusty"

gurlieak replied: "You can really get into long term withdrawl problems if you are not careful. Severe withdrawal symptoms can develop from patients on any level of dosage, so if you're taking a low dose don't think you're necessarily safe. Effexor withdrawal symptoms can easily last two months or more, and some people don't feel back to normal even after a year of discontinuation. Because effexor has a 'half-life' of about five hours, withdrawal symptoms can develop from missing only one dose. (The half-life refers to the amount of time it takes the body to metabolize one-half of the drug.) Five hours is a frighteningly short half-life for a drug of this nature. It almost guarantees problems. One Harvard study found 78% of patients experienced withdrawal symptoms from discontinuing effexor xr making it the only drug worse than paxil in this regard.... ... As withdrawal time increases, so does the frequency of the shocks, before they wane completely. At their peak, "brain shivers" have been associated with severe headaches. They may last for a period of several weeks after the last dose, but usually resolve completely within a month. However, the effect may only last a few days. There is hypothetical and anecdotal evidence that Omega 3 supplementation can be very helpful to alleviate the symptoms of brains shivers."

ck replied: "withdrawal symptoms will show up quickly for sure, as u have found. i experienced brain shivers, which are harmless as far as i know. time of withdrawal was a few days for me, but i was only on 75mg. i think u should not go off a med like that cold-turky. ask for a lower dosage and ween off if you dont think effexor works for you. there are lots of other meds you can try, so just remember not to freak out. games not over yet."

Daniel F replied: "it takes awhile - i haven't tried effexor, but i had lots of 'jolts' and kicking legs at night after going off paxil. it took a couple of weeks."

Sabine replied: "Those are called "zaps I wish you'd reconsider going cold turkey. That's very dangerous. Can you cut your pills down a little, or break them in half?? I'm sorry to say this but your withdrawals could become worse as days progress. Consider shaving your pills a little bit, one week at a time. Drink A LOT of water, try to avoid sugar- you might crave sugar or bread, see if you can stand some mild exercise, take some fiber (Metamucil or something) because you might get some bowel trouble. It took me 9 months to wean myself off Paxil and it was the worst experience of my life (sorry). Since you've only been on Effexor for 2 months, it might not be as bad. I hope not. I agree with what Gurligeak said above. Even 18 months later I still don't feel right-- it's been a long road to recover."

cornleg123 replied: "I took Effexor for about three years and just recently weaned off of them. It's been about three months or so, and I STILL get brain zaps once in a while. I didn't think I would make it, and I was only taking 75 mg. Unfortunately, I think I've gained weight since being OFF Effexor."

Elle replied: "ick. I went off that too, nasty med, and I dont feel it helped a bit. I tried a few other anti depressants too...none of those helped. you know what finally did the trick? an anxiety medicine. anxiety and depression tend to go hand in hand, and cycle back and forth. when I was treated from the anxiety side, the depression got soooo much better. I took xanax as needed, a low dose, only .5 mg. sometimes I would take it everyday for a bit, sometimes I would only need it once or twice a month. I never got addicted or had any issues with that. anyways, have your doc screen you for anxiety. you might have better luck with treatment from that side of the coin."

Natalya replied: "It's hard to say how long you'll suffer these withdrawal problems; my guess would be a few weeks. Some doctors are giving Prozac to people who have stopped Effexor, to help with these problems. One thing I do find a tad strange: you say you researched the medications, so presumably you came across all the complaints made by people stopping Effexor - and yet you stopped it cold turkey! It seems like a bit of a strange decision...! Hope you feel better soon."

Help with Effexor withdrawal? My insurance lapsed and I can't afford almost $300 for my Effexor, taken for over five years. I am now in day 5 of cold turkey, how long will these withdrawals last. Is this dangerous. have "brain freezes," numbness and tingling around my lips, itching all over, sleeping all the time with horrific dreams--Will it every stop? My husband thinks I am crazy. My job is also suffering.

Pick A Winner replied: "I went cold turkey once and it took me about a month to get back to normal. It didn't kill me or anything."

Gabe replied: "go to your doctor immediatly. they have more than enough of the sample packs to give you until yoru able to get back on. if not go to the e.r and get detoxed. stopping cold turkey can kill you. if you decide waiting it out it's gonna be at least 10 days, while up to a month"

jeff_iversen@sbcglobal.net replied: "You can ask your pharmacist for free. He/She can tell you what to expect. Effexor withdrawal symptoms can easily last two months or more, and some people don't feel back to normal even after a year of discontinuation. You should have gone off of it gradually. Is it possible to get some free samples from your doctor in order to do a gradual withdrawal?"

Boudica Warrior Queen replied: "I'm not familiar with your health system but surely in a civilised society you can get termporary help to pay for medication. Can you husband not help you out here as it is important that you get the treatment you require otherwise you could do untold harm to your mental state by going cold turkey. I know what I'm talking about and so i advise you to get in touch with a medical professional."

Withdrawals from Effexor XR? Hi, I am on my last 5 days of 37.5mg. I was taking 150mg, then 75mg and now 37.5mg. After these 5 days I will be off all meds. Should I expect the brain shivers and dizziness when I finish this dosage? I (tried) to quit cold turkey and ended up at the Doctors office. He, after scolding me for doing that, started tapering me off, over a 2 wk period. I really dread the thought of going through the withdrawal again. I was soooo sick. Is it going to happen again? If so, what can I take to help get through it?

genler100 replied: "well i wld suggest tlking to ur dr...why are u gng off of it? i am on the 150 and i keep hearing about these withdrawls....is there another med he can put u on to help if u do w/d get back with me"

Elisha replied: "You don't take anything. You check yourself into rehab. Sounds like youv'e been popping to many pills."

Jacob W replied: "Why are you going off of it? I am currently at the 300mg level of it. If I skip or don't take for a while, I do get sick. It best to ask a doctor for sure to get off of it and see if it is best to get off it. Since you have slowly decreased the amount you take you shouldn't have any troubles. If you just stop taking it, you can have problems. The body can't handle an also of a sudden stop in taking medicine."

Shining Ray of Light replied: "I was on Effexor XR also and have not taken it for over a year now. I thought it was helping while I was on it, but once I stopped taking it, I felt like a brand new person. I too went through withdrawels...I threw up, got the shakes, weak in the knees, didn't have much motivation to do anything. BUT, I constantly prayed hard for God to help me overcome my depression and asked everyone I knew to pray for me also. It was tough at first, but the power of prayer and changing your own mentality (telling yourself you're not sick) into mind over matter, it surely worked. I know it can work for you too! Holistic Medicine really works. Just tell your body/mind/soul that you aren't going to be sick anymore all day, everyday until you feel better. I too will keep you in my prayers and good luck!"

memere replied: "Any MEDS YOU DECIDE TO GO OFF, YOU SHOULD WEAN YOURSELF OFF. just BECAUSE YOU DECREASED THE DOSE, DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL NOT HAVE AN ADVERSE REACTION TO THE WITHDRAWAL. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IS GRADUALLY DECREASE THE DAYS. I MEAN, YOU SHOULD START OF BY DECREASING THE AMOUNT OF TIMES A DAY. IF IT'S 3 TIMES A DAY, THE START TAKING 2 A DAY. DO THIS FOR 1 WK. THEN DECREASE IT TO 1 A DAY FOR 1 WK. NO. YOU DON'T STOP THERE. NEXT, GO TO EVERY OTHER DAY. THEN EVERY 3DAYS AND SO ON. IT TAKES TIME FOR A MEDICATION TO LEAVE YOUR SYSTEM DEPENDING HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN ON IT. THE DOSE DOESN'T MATTER, THE EFFECTS WILL BE THE SAME. YOU WILL GRADUALLY STOP THE MEDS BECAUSE BY GRADUALLY DECREASING YOUR DOSE, THE BRAIN GETS THE MESSAGE. THIS IS THE SAFEST WAY TO GET OFF A MED. BY ALL MEANS SPEAK TO YOUR DOCTOR. MOST DOCTORS WILL AGREE THAT SLOW WITHDRAWAL FROM A MED IS THE BEST METHOD. GOOD LUCK"

onanutmission replied: "37.5 is the lowest dose -you'll be fine."

1GR8MOM replied: "I too, was weaned off Effexor when my doctor and I decided that it was time to go off. Instead of going down to 37.5 for the last week, she had me continue for an additional week by taking the 37.5 every second day. This prevented any side effects from happening. I also made many changes in my life to ensure that I would not have a relapse. Certain life situations can make us depressed or suffer from anxiety. Is your life all you want it to be or do you need to make some serious changes. If you dont change the root cause, then chances are, the depression will come back.
